Sara Umbro
She/Her
Expressive Arts Therapy & Counseling Student Intern
Sara is pursuing her M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Expressive Arts Therapy at Lesley University. She has a B.A. in Psychology and eight years of clinical experience in neuropsychology.
She is drawn to expressive arts therapy for its integration of visual art, movement, music, drama, and creative writing into a therapeutic process grounded in imagination, embodiment, and play. This process fosters connection to self and others in ways that feel intuitive, symbolic, and emotionally resonant.
Sara’s clinical interests include working with neurodivergent children and adolescents, supporting emerging adults and helping individuals navigate depression, anxiety, trauma, and major life transitions. Sara is passionate about creating spaces where clients feel understood and empowered.
Her approach is integrative, grounded in strengths-based and narrative practices, while also drawing from trauma-informed care, somatic awareness, mindfulness, and a systems perspective that considers the broader social, cultural, and environmental factors shaping clients’ lives. With a professional background in neuropsychology, Sara has supported clients with cognitive challenges, including Alzheimer’s, TBI, and ADHD. She is especially interested in how creative expression can support emotional regulation and foster a sense of belonging and agency.
As an intern at East Bay Art Therapy, she brings curiosity, empathy, and a deep respect for the emergent wisdom of the arts. Sara believes in meeting people where they are and supporting their unique creative unfolding. She is committed to co-creating spaces where clients feel safe, seen, and supported on their healing journeys.
In addition to her clinical work, Sara is a ceramicist and mixed-media artist. She loves spending time in her studio and exploring the natural landscapes nearby. Originally from Massachusetts, she now lives in Northern California and draws inspiration from coastal landscapes, wild gardens, and waterways.
Sara is available to see individuals ages 4 and up at our Oakland office on Sundays and Mondays (or virtually).
